This week I cashed in one of my birthday presents – a thoroughly enjoyable felting afternoon with Linda Irving.  I took along this silk chiffon scarf that I had dyed and she took me through the process of nuno felting it.

There is a simple swirly pattern on one side and a pattern of vibrant pinky/purply mandalas and leaves on the other side.

The wool fibres shrink when felted, which creates some gorgeous ruffled and crinkled negative shapes on the unfelted parts of the silk.  The fibres also penetrate into the silk a little and on the reverse it looks much more autumnal, where the colours have mixed with the green of the scarf.

I’m thrilled to bits with how it has turned out and it’s got me looking at my silk scarves and spinning fibre with fresh eyes!
